Young Wildlife Warrior - Interview with Isaac Busuttil

What ignited your passion for wildlife?

My passion for wildlife began when I was 4. It all came about on a holiday to Queensland where we went to Australia Zoo. I noticed that there was a tiger presentation and I was very intrigued by my fascination for wildlife. I heard that the Sumatran tigers were critically endangered and that’s when it changed for me. I went from liking animals just like every other kid to wanting to help them and make a difference in our magnificent world. After pestering my parents to help me raise money for the Sumatran tigers for over a month, my parents decided to let my passion go wild and support me in my desires to raise funds and raise awareness for our beautiful wildlife. In 6 months I managed to raise over $700 for the Australia Zoo’s Sumatran Tiger conservation program. While handing over the money to Australia Zoo, I discovered that whatever I put my mind to, I could achieve it one way or another. I was lucky enough to get a close encounter with these beautiful creatures and meet the Irwin family for the first time, who are also amazing wildlife warriors.

Why do you think wildlife is important?

I think wildlife is so important because of the way everything falls into place and has a purpose in our world. For example, how the spider catches the fly, but if we had no spiders then we would be living in fly mania! Every animal has a purpose and if we lose one species, the whole animal food chain can fall. Equally, I love how some animals can fly, some animals can swim and some animals can run, they are just so amazing. Our wildlife is just as important as us humans on this earth.

What (or who) inspires you the most in life?

There are lots of people who inspire me such as Jane Goodall, Steve Irwin, David Attenborough and Steve Backshall. What do all of these people have in common? A passion for wildlife and the environment. They have taught me who I truly am, a wildlife warrior, because these people inspired me to follow my passion for wildlife and conservation. They have taught me how amazing our wildlife is and equally why we should work so hard to live alongside them.

If you could share one message with the entire world, what would it be?

If I could say one message to the world, it would be ‘I want people to look after wildlife and the environment with me and have an awareness for those that live under the sea, on land and in the air. Together we can be part of the solution, not the problem’.

What is your ultimate dream for the future of wildlife?

My dream is for all wildlife to not face endangerment and extinction, and suffer no habitat loss and poaching from humans. All I want is for them to live a happy life, like us humans do. I am working on this dream already as I Facebook, Instagram and YouTube social media channels all with the same aim, to make other people see how amazing our wildlife is and hopefully, they will want to protect them too.

What do you think is the most important challenge facing wildlife?

The most challenging thing that wildlife is facing is actually us. As humans we poach them, take away their habitats and food sources. Over the years we have created so much pollution that it has affected their climate (climate change). Each person may do a little bit of damage to the Earth and think it is no big deal, but when you put all those little bits of damage together you end up with a catastrophe. You can support Isaac's brilliant work by following him on Facebook, Instagram and Youtube
